You put the meaning into the word Retirement
I didn’t come here to retire but I ended up retiring here. To be honest, when I came here in the 80s (I was only in my 20s) I was thinking that I would leave when it was time to retire. As I mentioned in another article that back in the 80s Creston looked pretty shabby (greatly improved since then) and if it weren’t for a business opportunity I would not have selected this area to live. However, at the time of moving to the Creston Valley I was not aware this area is a hidden gem, especially for its wholesome cozy lifestyle.
When my husband and I were ready to retire (I was 48 yrs. old and Lee 53 yrs. old) we decided to consider a move to somewhere else. We created a list of “must haves”. A location must exceed in what we already have here. We ruled out the other provinces because they didn’t have the mountains and temperate climate. We also didn’t want to leave the country. We took a couple years searching throughout the lower mainland, Vancouver Island, and the Okanagan region. They all had something special but they never did come close to what this area collectively offers. What it means to retire to Creston Valley and Kootenay Lake east shore can be summed up by saying that this area is able to satisfy a youthful retiree’s needs and in due time ease them into their old age well supported. |

In conclusion, I want to let you know that retirement looks very different for each person who lives in this area.
For instance, Lee needed to get back into the business community so he became a Realtor and loves it. I feel fulfilled when I am involved in community initiatives. I recently completed long distance education through McMaster University and I am now working on a business plan for a new venture. Many of my retired friends enjoy indulging in their hobbies that leave room for enjoying their grandkids visits. Others are having fun playing and socializing through dinners, cultural events, golfing, and many other activities. I call retirement, re-inspire-ment. There is freedom that comes with this time of life and there is room here for self-exploration and self-expression. |
