Those of us in the Creston Valley and Kootenay Lake had our bubble burst when this winter brought a lengthy spell of severe cold weather days. Other years we could be heard bragging about how mild our winters are compared to other Canadian regions. January 2016 we had only five days with weather below freezing. So far this January we have had everyday below freezing. However, we are still luckier here because our temperatures are higher than those east or north of us.
The one good thing about experiencing artic fronts is that they create ideal conditions for making outdoor skating rinks. In our valley the residents clear off outdoor rinks at Duck Lake, ponds and channels. This winter the snow is staying at lower elevations making it perfect for tobogganing and cross-country skiing. All you need to do is dress for the weather to enjoy the best of the wintery days. Besides there is nothing like coming indoors with rosy cheeks to settle in by a roaring fire with a hot beverage and a good book.
We love our four seasons, even winter.
